Crossview Heliosphaera Radiolaria Polycystina

Description

In order to view the stereographic part you should look at the screen comfortably from 50 - 60 cm while using the "crossview" technique; try to align the two images at the center, a 3rd one would appear, keep focusing; it should then pop out of the screen in 3D. It feels weird at first but give it try, the result worth it!

If you get dizzy, this is a still frame instead

It was fun doing this piece, because I wanted to experiment several things around. The 3D model was inspired by the works of Ernst Haeckel in his “Kunstformen der Natur” (Art of Nature) which shows incredible and fascinating illustrations about real microscopic structures with both, high scientific quality and superb aesthetics.

Secondly, I wanted to make a couple of textures from scratch to give the "look & feel" of a scanning electron microscope in a preparation, loop animation + DOF effect; It was tricky, though, I was using what appeared to be a non-standard functionality, that or it was flawed; so I've had a lot of rendering artifacts at first, although the model’s geometry was not extremely complex; was fixed… Just reducing the poly count...

The performance of a GC GeForce 8400 GS was tested as well; even when it claim to be 2x faster and just a quarter of the price I’ve spent in my old Quadro 3600 for visualization, it was not, the performance was horrible. I'll stick with the old Quadro from now on... Until a wild Fermi gets next to the Xmas Tree ;>

I hope you like it!
